AquaTektur #2 – Water houses

Nineteen architectural firms and Axor are thinking ahead

Havana 2003. New concepts sought for living, architecture and water: 19 architects from seven countries met in 2003 at the invitation of Axor for the second AquaTektur brainstorming event, once again held in Havana. With no specific construction project or product development, the aim was to develop new, unconventional ideas for life and living with water and on the water. The creative minds used the unusually free scope to create diverse interpretations, as can be seen from the 19 designs created by the end of the workshop. The Axor AquaTektur event series launched in 2002 therefore once again proved to be an exciting form of fundamental architectural research.

Living on the water

Megacities, overcrowding and environmental issues on all continents – is it not about time to rediscover water bodies as places to live? A number of the invited designers sketched visions of homes on an atoll, in towers on the water or in a floating city. Even the conversion of former oil drilling platforms into homes appeared conceivable. While the first workshop in 2002 focused on bathroom design, the architects at the second workshop “stood back” from properties and integrated their bathroom concepts into a larger context.

Regenerative and independent

In addition to civic development and architectural design considerations, a further core focus often fell on the “green” aspects of pioneering building technology: the ecologically inspired suggestions ranged from a self-sufficient home that uses grey water recycling and a low-tech irrigation system through to a water-saving “sponge house”. Independent energy supplies and the integration of nature into residential buildings using garden-like sub-levels also provided great food for discussion.
